What is a double chin?
A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a collection of fat cells under the jawline. It’s not necessarily related to obesity — even thin people can have a double chin. It is, however, one of the places the body stores excess fat, and it can be hard to get rid of that fat once it’s taken up residence.
The basics of Agnes RF
Agnes RF, approved by the US FDA in 2017, is a minimally invasive treatment used in a variety of nonsurgical aesthetic procedures, including double chin reduction. The RF stands for radiofrequency, a type of energy with a frequency in the 300KHz to 5MHz range.
The system also uses microneedling, producing small punctures in the skin that deliver the RF energy to the deeper skin tissues. The resulting heat destroys the existing fat cells, which are flushed from your system, and induces new collagen and elastin production, helping skin become firmer and tighter.
Unlike laser treatments, the radiofrequency microneedling procedure is safe for all skin types, including tan or brown, eliminating possible hyperpigmentation as a side effect.
Different from other RF devices, Agnes has nine types of micro-insulated needles that allow Dr. Kim to tailor treatments to your specific needs. And the insulation helps to protect the epidermis and other surrounding tissues from thermal burn. The energy only removes fat cells and induces collagen and elastin production, leaving the rest of your skin safe and healthy.
What your treatment will be like
Before you begin, Dr. Kim injects a local anesthetic to the treatment area so you’ll remain comfortable throughout. Then, we insert the microneedles into the areas of concern and the unit goes to work. As the RF energy begins heats up the tissues, you should feel little to no discomfort. Most treatments take 45-60 minutes, after which you may have some minor swelling and bruising.
Following the procedure, you might feel some tingling and experience redness and/or swelling and bruising for a couple of days, but you can apply an ice pack to the area to alleviate the symptoms.
We recommend two treatments over the course of two months to achieve the optimum results. However, some patients with more significant concerns may require additional sessions.
